ILIAS

Welcome to Instructional System & Design Canada — isdtech.ca

ISD Tech Canada is a personal hobby site sitting at the crossroads of instructional design theory, adult learning principles, and open-source technology — built for the kind of people who get excited about both cognitive load theory and Docker containers.

This site is a living, evolving project centered around the ILIAS Learning Management System — exploring what it looks like when solid ID practice meets a seriously capable open-source platform. No enterprise budget. No IT department. Just deliberate design choices, a self-hosted server, and a lot of coffee.

Who this is for:

  • Instructional Designers who want to understand what's actually happening under the hood of their LMS — and who want more control over the learning environments they build.
  • Adult Educators interested in andragogy-informed course design and how an open-source platform like ILIAS can support self-directed, competency-based, and collaborative learning models.
  • Techies & Hobbyists who love self-hosting, enjoy exploring open-source ecosystems, and want a real-world look at deploying and maintaining an LMS outside of a corporate or institutional setting.

What you'll find here:

Deep-dives into ILIAS features through an instructional design lens — examining not just how to configure a tool, but why it matters for the learner experience. Expect write-ups on course architecture, assessment design, SCORM and xAPI integration, accessibility considerations, and the occasional server-side adventure. Content is grounded in adult learning theory without taking itself too seriously.

Why ILIAS?

Because learners deserve more than a checklist tool dressed up as an LMS. ILIAS has been powering serious learning environments in European universities and public institutions for over two decades. It's flexible, standards-compliant, and completely free — making it an ideal sandbox for anyone who wants to explore what thoughtful, learner-centered design actually looks like in practice.

The philosophy here is simple:

Good instructional design doesn't require an expensive platform. And a powerful platform means nothing without intentional design behind it. ISD Tech Canada exists to explore both sides of that equation — openly, practically, and with genuine enthusiasm.
